You Will Never Look Like The Girl In The Magazine…

You will never look like the girl in the magazine. The girl in the magazine doesn’t look like the girl in the magazine. – Jessimae Peluso

I read something inspiring the other day and wanted to know your opinion about it: Huffington Post published an article in their Style section titled, “Verily Magazine’s No-Photoshop Policy Proves It Can Be Done“.

Screen Shot 2013-10-13 at 9.49.57 AM

The article discusses the female-operated magazine’s mission to it keep it real by not relying on Photoshop and other techniques to “artificially” enhance the appearance of their models.

From Verily Magazine’s Web site:

Like so many great ideas, Verily was conceived over a gathering of friends for brunch in NYC. Our conversation turned to the topic of women’s magazines–more specifically– how most of them fail to reflect our lives or our philosophies as women. We were a diverse group of women, hailing from all over the country and working in professions as varying as fashion, medicine, and philanthropy. We had gone through the learning curve of our first jobs, navigated life in a new city, and been on more first dates than many of us would like to admit. If this group of modern women were all feeling overlooked, surely others must feel the same way?

I thought this was pretty neat and encouraging to other women and celebrating the authenticity in our beauty.

What do you think?

Beauty Quickie: How to Revive Your Dry Mascara

2013-09-08 17.34.11

If you have noticed the fall makeup trends you’ve probably seen bold eye colors, particularly tinted mascaras.  I love using a tinted mascara to add dimension and a unique pop of color to any look. If you’re interested, your local drugstore/Target should be carrying this limited edition Great Lash line by Maybelline (approximatley $7.00 USD per tube):

{Photo Courtesy of Beauty High}

I actually purchased the Teal shade and will most likely purchase the Purple as well. I knew I already had a tinted mascara hiding out somewhere and after some digging I found a cobalt blue shade called Baby Rocker, which is a Punk Lash Mascara from Tokidoki that I purchased a little while ago at Sephora (this line is currently discontinued).

Needless to say, this poor guy was being neglected and when I tried to use it the formula was dry, dry, dry.

Instead of chucking it (it cost $17.00), I experimented to see if there was any chance to revive this. Even if only for a few more uses.

My first thought was to try baby oil. However, you may know baby oil works great to REMOVE makeup, so I didn’t want to risk separating the formula and ruining its properties.

I thought a little harder about what would be both a great lubricant and safe for the eyes…well, eye drops, of course!

So, my tip to you is if your mascara has started to show signs of dryness you might want to try adding a few drops of Visine directly into the tube.

Note: If your mascara is older than 6 months or if it has developed an odor–sorry, but you might be better off tossing the item to avoid risking an eye infection. No mascara can make a red, swollen eye look better!

I started with two drops and noticed an immediate difference. I added two more and thought that was enough. You can add more if you feel it will work better.

Below you can see what a difference the Visine has made:

J’Adore: Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil

2013-09-07 11.34.42

{Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil}

JAdore...

I’ve been a big fan of Clarins skin care products for a while now. I believe it is necessary to start with the best canvas (aka healthy skin) for your makeup to be radiant and enhance your features and I have not been let down by this product line.

When I was in college I worked briefly at Sephora and one brand clients often asked about was Clarins. I would explain my philosophy that putting effort into a solid skin care routine will ensure the best possible face. After all, makeup on blemished or tired skin tends to become a mask, rather than enhancement.

Many clients were hesitant to try it because of the price tag but after trying samples and seeing the results, they understood the quality of the products make it a worthwhile investment.

I’ve been experimenting in facial oils and surprisingly, I love them (main staple is Josie Maran 100% Argan Oil). The facial oils help balance natural face oils by sort of tricking the pores into thinking they have produced enough oil so your face won’t keep producing them,  which too much oil can clog pores and cause breakouts. I used oils during the summer and thought they would make me super greasy in the humidity, but they actually kept inflamation down and brightened my skin.

So I decided to try the Clarins version and I am loving the Lotus Face Treatment Oil. Ive been using this for about two weeks and I have noticed better retention of hydration and softening of dry patches (mainly around my nose and mouth).

Oils in general feel so luxurious and elegant, dahhhling. The Lotus oil is infused with rosemary, geranium, camomile and of course lotus extracts (100% pure plant extracts) and has a rich, earthy fragrance.  The description claims the rosemary and geranium combo helps reduce sebum production, which should mean fewer breakouts. The lotus extract is supposed to refine the skin.

I generally prefer my skin care and cosmetic products to be fragrance free; however, I rather like this fragrance. The only downside is it is strong and if you happen to dislike the fragrance in general, you might be disappointed when you apply it.

I use this as a nightly ritual after taking off makeup and washing my face I apply about three drops on my fingers. I lightly rub my fingers together to heat up the oil and apply on my face. I gently massage the oil onto my skin and allow it to absorb fully before making contact with my pillow.

I wake up with a slight glow, educed dryness and a more supple feeling (victory!). I expect this will be a savior during cold weather, which temperatures are already starting to drop!

Best Summer Concealers Part 4: The Drug Store Score

2013-07-31 22.10.23

{The Drug Store Score: Revlon ColorStay Blemish Concealer}

{Formula} Created with a “time release” formula to keep coverage looking fresh for up to 24 hours, this drug store score is one of the best investments you can make. Affordable and accessible, you might want to stock up on a few as backups and to keep in your purse. Product glides on easily and the creamy texture makes for a smooth application; very easy to blend under the eye or on blemishes.

{Packaging} The ColorStay line from Revlon mimics the sophisticated, minimalist appearance of higher end lines such as MAC and Chanel. The doe foot applicator applies product directly onto skin; however I would recommend using a finger or concealer brush on any breakouts so you do not transfer bacteria into the tube.

Tip: because the doe foot applicator can bring unwanted air and bacteria into the tube, you should consider a simple way to sanitize. Having air trapped inside the tube (from taking applicator in and out) can promote drying out of product and makes an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.

How to quickly sanitize: Dab some isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol (at least 70% alcohol) on a cotton pad and wipe off excess product from of the applicator. Add some more alcohol to the pad and place on the tip for 30 seconds to ensure germs are killed. Alcohol evaporates fairly quickly. Once tip is dry, insert back into tube. Good job!

{Application} I like to take the product on my clean finger and apply directly to the areas that need it. I find it is strong enough to cover broken capillaries around the nose but is not drying, even when I have allergies.

Tip: to create a precise eye liner or lip liner application, use the concealer to line the area under eye liner or around the lips and blend with concealer brush or damp sponge. This particular formula is concentrated enough to create clean lines and fix any smudge situation.

Available: Target

Retail Price: $8.49 for 0.21 Fl oz.

Best Summer Concealers Part 1: The Lightweight

2013-07-31 22.06.06

{Benefit Cosmetics Fake Up}

First up, we have our Lightweight concealer from Benefit Cosmetics. She’s pretty and shiny and she sure packs quite a punch!

2013-08-01 13.27.18

The Lightweight: Benefit Fake Up

{Formula} A layer of hydration surrounds a core of smooth concealer. Infused with vitamin E and apple seed extract, this will aid in moisturizing and brightening the eye area. Light, creamy texture makes for a smooth, hydrating finish. This is ideal for a natural makeup look, humid summer days (hello, heat wave!) and running to the grocery store.

{Packaging} I’m a sucker for cute package design and Benefit never disappoints in this aspect. The concealer comes in a metallic retractable lipstick tube which makes it easy to control application. Definitely deserves a spot on the vanity counter.

{Application} I prefer to swipe this on under my eyes in a gentle windshield wiper motion. For a highlighting effect, I draw the shape of an inverted triangle beneath the entire under eye area and fill this in. I use a clean ring finger to pat onto skin and blend into the inner corners and onto the eye lids. Say ‘goodbye’ to dark circles!

Tip: Streaking is scary!  This formula is very creamy. To avoid unwanted lines and to achieve a “barely there” result, blend well with clean finger or damp cosmetic sponge (I suggest sponges from Sonya Kashuk or Beauty Blender). A concealer brush may move formula around too much.
